The Concept of "FLOW"

When I was in college (WAAAY back in the day, haha) I learned about the concept of FLOW. I've thought about it a lot since then. FLOW is one of those things that has a potential to bring people great happiness.
The idea is that when people are really, "into," something they are able to block everything else out and experience a surreal kind of focus on the project or experience at hand. In turn, they derive a profound sense of accomplishment both in the process and the completed task.
For those at the top of their game, it is easy to see the FLOW experience occuring (think Michael Jordan, tongue out, takin' it to the hoop.)
Another example is a cross-country or down-hill skier looping down their towering snow-covered mountain. They have the opportunity to use all of their harnessed skills to execute a very chiseled run. At this moment, all other thoughts are on the back-burner and the task at hand takes full precedence. Many other professions or recreational pursuits achieve this FLOW moment. You can probably think of some examples yourself. Artists and surgeons come to mind because they are using their hands to actually create something. This takes focus and energy and a sense of confidence. Then, we all have the piece to look at in awe.

I think that if this experience occurs in your chosen profession, it may be a sign that you are in the right place doing something you love. Even if it only happens once in a while at work. If you take one look at your job and think, "I've never felt this FLOW concept," then don't take it too hard! You may still have it in your personal recreation of choice i.e. swimming, hiking, playing guitar, even cleaning the bathroom? haha.

When I first saw your title I thought of 'flow' as in, you know, flow, cash, moola, Money. I thought...hum. I guess it might bring some people momentary happiness. Silly me, this is just an idea I've never really heard of before... very interesting and something I'd like to achieve in various aspects of my life. Sometimes I feel like I'm running around doing so many things at once nothing gets done or at least done well. It is so nice when you know you've done something, it was your best effort and you gave all you had. Again, a very interesting topic.
